How To Become A Commercial Cook

Do you like to cook? Do you like to work in a fast-paced environment? If so, then a career as a commercial cook may be right for you.  If you are interested in becoming a commercial chef, one of the best ways to get there is to attend culinary school.

How To Become A Commercial Cook - Commercial Cooking Schools

Do I need to go to culinary school?

Technically no, you do not need to attend culinary school in order to get a job as a commercial cook. There are many individuals who do not get their culinary degree, and instead start at the bottom, working in a kitchen and work their way up.However, there are several advantages to attending culinary school:

Firstly, with a culinary degree you will be able to get a better paying, and higher level position when you first enter the workforce than you would with no degree.

Secondly, many of your culinary courses will provide you with the opportunity to learn about different kinds of cooking, and food preparation that you may never get a chance to experience by working in only one kitchen.

Finally, many culinary degree programs will not only offer typical culinary courses on how to cook, but many will also offer you the opportunity to take courses in management, human resources, and even finances. This information will be invaluable should you ever be interested in being promoted to a management position, or if you think you might like to one day open your own restaurant.

What can I expect at culinary school?

Culinary school, much like working in a restaurant will be both demanding, and fast-paced. You will have the opportunity to take culinary courses, and learn about a wide variety of cooking techniques, as well as baking. You will also learn how to take care of kitchen equipment, as well as about health codes, safe food preparation, portion sizing and menu planning.

Many culinary schools will also offer you the opportunity to do an internship in a restaurant as part of your culinary degree program. This is an opportunity to experience firsthand what it is like to work in a kitchen, and to ensure that you are cut out for this career path.

What happens when I finish culinary school?

Once you have graduated with your culinary degree, you will be eligible to work in a kitchen, however many places will require you to get a license in order to work in a kitchen. This will typically include testing on food safety, preparation and health codes. Once you have obtained your license you will also need to make sure you renew it throughout your career.

While demanding, and sometimes highly stressful, a job as a commercial cook can be quite rewarding for those who enjoy cooking.
