What are my dental assisting school options?

If you are interested in attending dental assisting school, you will need to determine which level you would like to achieve. The level you chose will have an effect on the dental assisting courses that you will take.

Level 1 dental assisting school

An individual who has earned their level 1 dental assisting degree works as a “chair side” assistant. These dental assisting degree graduates can be found seating and preparing patients. Some of the other duties that a level 1 dental assisting degree graduate can perform includes: charting patient information, sterilizing equipment, pouring and trimming cast models, and providing patient education.

Level 2 dental assisting school

A level 2 dental assisting degree graduate will have taken all of the same dental assisting courses as a level 1 dental assisting degree graduate, as well as additional dental assisting courses. Some of the duties that a level 2 dental assisting school graduate will perform include: dental radiography, taking impressions of teeth, dietary counseling, and application of topical anesthetics.

How much will I make working as a dental assisting degree graduate?

Once you have completed your dental assisting school degree, your salary will be dependent on what level of dental assisting courses you completed.

Once you have graduated from level 1 dental assisting school, you can expect to earn a  starting salary of $ 15 per hour. From there, after working in the field for a few years, your salary will likely increase to $ 17 to $ 20 per hour.

Once you earn your level 2 dental assisting school, you can expect to earn a starting salary of %16 to $ 18 per hour. After you have several years of experience working in the field, you can expect to earn an average salary of $ 20 to $ 23 per hour.

You will also be able to use the knowledge and skills you learned from your dental assisting school program and courses in order to work other jobs within a dentist’s or oral surgeon’s office, such as working as an office manager, or a treatment coordinator.
