The health care industry continues to be a great career choice. As the baby boomer generation continues to age, there is going to be an increasing need for people to work in this field, especially nursing. While many people are not prepared to put in the time and effort to become a registered nurse, there is another option. You can become a certified nurse’s assistant.

How to Become a Certified Nurse’s Assistant

To obtain certification as a nurse’s assistant, candidates must complete a certification course. These courses are often taught at technical schools or community colleges and usually take one year to complete.

In a similar way to other career in the health care industry, you will be required to take a variety of courses on a wide variety of health care topics. Courses include Medical Care, First Aid, Nutrition, Infection Control, Physical Rehabilitation, and a variety of other courses that will help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to work in a health care environment.

Once you graduate from the program you will have the skills and situational knowledge that you need to go the job effectively. You will understand important fundamental care elements, have CPR knowledge, and have a detailed understanding of how to react to varying degrees of patient needs.

Upon completing all of your course work, you will be required to take a certification exam to officially gain certification as a nurse’s assistant. When you pass the test, you will then be required to apply for your CNA license. Keep in mind that these steps many vary based on the state or county you live in, so check with your local health official to be clear.

Career Options

Once you obtain your certification, many new certified nurses’ assistants start their career with an internship. You may even be able to a position and begin working while you are still in school. However, positions in this career are increasingly in high demand as there is increasingly becoming a greater need for health care professionals.

The average salary for a certified nursing assistant is approximately $30 thousands per year. However, this rate may vary based on your experience and the type of facility that you work in. The most common facilities you would work in include hospitals, nursing homes, rehab facilities, doctors’ offices, and wellness clinics.
